Who are some of the great authors in the world that you’ve read or watched? From Shakespeare to Hemingway, from Dickens to Twain, there are thousands of famous authors out there who have inspired us.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

A writer is known for his unique ability to make sentences interesting and enjoyable. He was born on February 22, 1812, in Portsmouth, England. Furthermore, his  novels include The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations among others.

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910)

Best known for War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and The Death of Ivan Ilych, he is one of the best novelists of all time. He was born on September 27, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia.

Jane Austen (1775-1817)

She has been called “England’s First Modern Novelist.” Her novels are often cited as examples of wit and wordplay. Some of her major works are Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and Mansfield Park. She died in Winchester, England on July 19, 1817, at age 29.

Agatha Christie (1890-1976)

One of the most popular mystery writers in modern times: she remains very active today! Born on October 16, 1890, in Torquay, Devon, United Kingdom. The names of her many books like Murder on the Orient Express, And Then There Were None, Evil Under the Sun, etc. have become synonymous with detective fiction.

Erich Maria Remarque (Emmanuel Marcus Röhrbach) (1900-1970)

Germany’s most awarded contemporary author also wrote classic war novels that influenced a generation of authors. His most famous novel is All Quiet on the Western Front, one of the first anti-war novels where an individual tries to come to terms with the horrors of war.

J.R.R Tolkien (1892-1973)

Hobbit creator, Lord of Middle Earth, and Professor of English Literature at Oxford University died on September 2nd 1973. As a professor, he had a huge influence on young people during the years of World War I when literacy was limited. Hence, to  this day he is still widely regarded as one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time.

Iris Murdoch (1919-1999)

An Irish-born British novelist writing in the tradition of Dostoevsky and Proust, one of the leading figures of 20th-century philosophy, especially existentialism. She may be best known for her 1978 book The Sea, the Sea which won both the Booker Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1979. She died on March 6, 1999, in London.

Herman Melville (1819-1891)

Considered by many to be America’s greatest 19th-century novelist, he is well known primarily for Moby Dick, which has been acclaimed as a masterpiece since its publication in 1851.

Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945)

Known mainly for Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy, he was labelled as the “King of the American Realist”.

John Steinbeck (1902-1968)

One of America’s finest writers, Steinbeck is another voice in the tradition of realism, depicting Mexican migrant life, working-class labourers and poverty. Moreover, his  characters struggle against social injustice and prejudice.

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)

Well-known essay writer, short story writer, literary critic, memoirist and feminist, she is considered by many as the foremost female novelist of the twentieth century.

Marcel Proust (1871-1922)

Often referred to as France’s greatest living writer, he remains one of the most influential figures in French literature. In addition to his seven volumes of Remembrance of Things Past (À la Recherche du Temps Perdu), he published three other volumes of essays and three volumes of letters.

Thomas Mann (1875-1955)

Considered by some critics to be Germany’s greatest novelist, he achieved fame with Death in Venice and Buddenbrooks. He also won the Nobel Prize in 1954 for his novella Doctor Faustus.

Henry James (1843-1916)

One of the founders of modernism in fiction, he achieved lasting recognition with his five novels The Wings of the Dove, What Maisie Knew, The Golden Bowl, The Ambassadors and The Portrait of a Lady.

Robert Musil (1880-1942)

Considered by most as being the greatest Austrian writer of the early 20th century, he was a central figure of the School of Vienna whose work reacted against Expressionism and naturalism. His last major text, The Man without Qualities, was unfinished at the point of death.

Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939)

Also known as one of the fathers of Decadence, Ford was a key member of the Bloomsbury Group, associated with the development of Modernism in literature. In addition,  first two books were connected and became The Good Soldier and Parade’s End.
